Parents of special needs children - especially those with language and sensory challenges - know just how challenging even routine medical procedures can be. For instance, it is nearly impossible to get a blood pressure or oxygen reading on Becca. She can’t tolerate the feeling of the oximeter on her finger or the cuff on her arm. She isn’t always able to tell me where it hurts, so visits could take longer while we exhaust all possibilities. She doesn’t always understand when we explain things to her so it’s more difficult to prepare her in advance.

So naturally, we decided to wait until she was older to take her to her first dental visit. Since she’s been more cooperative at medical visits in recent months and is more able to focus and follow directions we decided to take her today. And while it was a bit rocky in the beginning, she was able to get through the exam and the cleaning like a champion. We couldn’t be more proud of her - and we got this cute keepsake from the dental office of her first visit.

This is a huge deal!
